Orson Weems
Orson Weems was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1962. His early years were marked by frequent moves, living in Pine Bluff from third grade until entering the tenth grade, before returning to North Little Rock, where he graduated from Northeast High School in 1980. Known for his exceptional football skills, Orson became an All-American and was heavily recruited by colleges nationwide. He chose to attend the University of Arkansas, influenced by his brothers' enrollment there and his desire to uplift his home state through his talents.
At the University of Arkansas, Orson played football under Coach Lou Holtz, becoming the first Black senior class president at North Little Rock Northeast. His college experience was shaped by both the camaraderie of fellow African American students and the challenges of navigating a predominantly white institution during a period of racial tension. Despite these obstacles, he forged lasting friendships and earned his degree.
Orson's professional journey included a move back to Little Rock, where he joined his father's business. His entrepreneurial spirit led him into the investment and construction industries, where he encountered and overcame numerous racial and structural barriers. He co-founded a boutique investment firm and later, the Music Education Initiative, aiming to provide opportunities and hope through music and technical training.
Throughout his life, Orson has been committed to improving the state of Arkansas. He has been involved in various community projects, including the Sixth and Goal football program in Little Rock, designed to keep young Black males engaged and away from crime. His efforts have consistently focused on creating economic opportunities and fostering resilience in the face of adversity.
Orson remains a dedicated Arkansan, valuing the relationships and pace of life in his home state. His contributions to education, business, and community development reflect his unwavering commitment to making Arkansas a better place for all its residents.
